In an earlier incarnation, Hayden Veil enjoyed a successful career in software engineering, writing late-night poetry in pursuit of sanity. On 2 February 2020, the world of Hayden Veil changed: Ghosts became real and with its soul laid bare there was no turning back from the perpetual path of poetry.

SEVENTEEN AND STILL SMILING

Seventeen and
still smiling, the
innocence of
growing up,
pain free
days and light
in all tunnels,
careful – it will
come to an end
all too soon

Above the clouds

On 4th of March at midday
a knock on the door
a parcel left outside
no name or other clue

Inside a note
“Wear me at night”
Signed
“Yours Sincerely
Xavier LeClevere”

It was a helmet of sorts
Two halves, strapless design
In Steel blue reflectionless
Glass

As dusk turned to night
I donned the device
Lied down on the bed
Contemplating rest

But sleep came not easy
In fact it came not
To visit that night
or others following

As far as they could tell
I had spent years in
that place, my muscled
detetiorated, being alive
a miracle

All I remember was flying
crossing the skies in a
chariot of light
I was God, creator of all
watching, smiling at the
insanity of it all

DISCONNECTED

You once said if you’d
ever meet
Dave Grohl you
wouldn’t know
what to say
there was no
connection there
Well babes, that’s
how I feel with
everyone I meet

WASTER OF TIME

In steaming milk

the lumps

afloating

reminders of

days long gone

memories of

better times

of richness and beauty

across the land

Now spartan walls

in all directions

a crumbling floor

begreets my eyes

every morn

the broken arrow in

shoulder stuck

singing karaoke on

its own

Cupid – shooter –

waster of time

FADING FIRE

Not sure anymore
if I’ve ever been
on fire but
being burnt out now
I guess I
must have
been – once

A STRANGER’S HAND

I saw a stranger’s hand
reaching out
to give or to receive
I cannot say but
it was attached to
my arm
either way
